Editorial policy

How we choose sources, check facts, date our checks, translate guides and correct mistakes.

People who read New in Europe are often making decisions about documents, money and work in a country whose language they do not speak yet. A wrong fact can cost them time, a fine or a missed appointment. This policy describes how we try to prevent that.

Sources

  • Every rule, requirement, fee, deadline or form name in a guide must come from an official source: a government or municipal portal, a migration or tax authority, a public health insurer, or the official site of the bank or provider being described.
  • Examples of sources we use: the Polish government portal gov.pl, the German Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (bamf.de), and the Czech Ministry of the Interior (mvcr.cz), along with regional offices where rules differ by region.
  • News articles, forums and social media can point us to a change, but they are never the source of a fact on its own. We confirm the change on an official page first.
  • Sources are listed at the end of each guide with a link, so you can check them yourself.

No invented numbers

If a source does not state a number, such as a fee, a processing time or an income limit, we do not estimate one. We write that the source does not publish it and tell you whom to ask. Example amounts are labelled as examples and are never presented as official.

Check dates

Each guide shows the date its facts were last checked against the sources. That date changes only when someone has actually rechecked the facts, not when we fix a typo. Pages about temporary protection show the end date of the status given by the official source and remind you to check whether it has been extended.

Countries and languages

A guide describes one country. We do not reuse a text written for one country in another, because procedures differ even when they have similar names. Within one country, the Ukrainian, English and Russian versions of a guide contain exactly the same facts; only language and examples are adapted. When we update a fact, we update all language versions of that guide.

Tools and review

Drafts may be prepared with the help of software tools, including AI writing assistants. Nothing is published until an editor has checked every factual statement against the listed sources. Tools never decide what counts as a fact.

Commercial links

Affiliate links are marked, are limited to services that are useful to newcomers, and never decide what a guide says. We do not publish payday loans, credit offers for people without income or paid placements disguised as advice.

Corrections

If you find a mistake, write to [email protected] with the page address and, if possible, the official page that shows the correct rule. We check every report. When a correction changes a fact, we update the guide and its check date.
